This is the same image as displayed in the Canon PowerShot G5 Wide-Angle tests on the other page.

I took this picture with a Nikon FTn and a Nikkor 24mm/2.8 lens on a Kodak 400 ISO negative film. It is very unfortunate that I did not take this picture with a 35mm lens and Fujifilm Velvia 50, but this is the closest film picture that I got for this comparison.

For the comparison tests, I scanned the negative in 5400 DPI (219 MB) without using ICE, enhanced it with Photoshop (219 MB) then cropped it to keep the small portion (turquoise box, 12 MB) that shows a similar image area Image P3,  used earlier in the Canon G5 file format tests.

Image P3

This is a cropped portion of the WIDE-1 image in JPEG with Fine compression, enhanced with Photoshop (1.5 MB).

Image N2

This is the JPEG version (reduced to 400x311 137 KB) of the cropped TIFF file (1620x1260 12 MB) described above.

It looks like the Nikon Ftn-24mm/2.8-generated image on an ISO 400 negative is less sharp than a Canon PowerShot G5-generated picture.

Unfortunately this Canon PowerShot G5 versus Nikon FTn-24mm/2.8 comparison test is non conclusive as we are basically still comparing apples with oranges here.

I will try to redo similar tests, but this time with a Nikkor 35mm lens on a Velvia 50 film, and all pictures will be taken at the same time from the SAME point of view.
